Rico Hoey’s Baycurrent Classic Finish Marks Another Win for Filipino Representation in Golf

Written by Niko Del Rey

Rico Hoey is the first full blooded Filipino golfer on the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) tour. Although his upbringing can be traced back to Rancho Cucamonga, California, at a young age, Hoey was originally born in Manila, Philippines, on September 19, 1995, making him the only active PGA member representing the Philippines.

Rico Hoey grew up playing golf and even shared his home course of Goose Creek Golf Club (Mira Loma, CA) with fellow PGA tour member, Sahith Theegala. In an interview with Fore Magazine in 2023, Theegala told Fore Magazine that “Hoey is a genuine person who makes it fun to be around” and goes on to further reflect that his peers were pulling for him and wanting him to be successful. And Hoey did just that, winning the 2012 Callaway Junior World Championship, beating out future PGA Tour pro Beau Hossler’s 287 strokes through four rounds to Hoey’s 286 strokes through four rounds. Might I add how impressive that win was, considering Hoey was losing by 6 strokes after the first round. He would then finish out his younger adult years by playing for the University of Southern California (USC) from 2014 to 2017, where he would also win the 2016 SCGA Amateur Championship and taking second in the 2016 NCAA D1 Championship. Hoey had one of the best freshmen seasons in USC History, finishing with a 71.36 stroke average and earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Honors.

In 2017, Hoey turned professional playing for the PGA Tour Canada and the Web.com Tour, where he would finish 4th in points at the end of the season which catapulted him to earn his status for a Pro Card to play on the 2024 PGA Tour. Hoey claimed four top 10s in his 2024 rookie PGA Tour season, including a runner up finish at the ISCO Championship. Hoey is hoping to continue to represent the Philippines for the rest of his career and has his eyes set for the upcoming 2028 Olympics.
