5 Filipino EDM Artists You Should Know

Within the past 20 years, EDM (Electronic Dance Music) has really taken off, we often see collabs of DJ’s and mainstream artists flooding the top 10 list like Justin Bieber & Jack Ü ’s ‘Where are Ü Now’ or even earlier than that, Daft Punk’s hit song with Kanye, ‘Stronger’. The allure to EDM has been growing like wildfire, spreading its reach to all areas of the globe and even prompting Filipinos to get in the studio to create their own form of electronic art. Let’s dive into our list of 5 Filipino EDM artists you should know.

1. Panic City

Bay Area native, Panic City is a DJ & Producer who has many accolades under his name, including producing official remixes for Diplo, Steve Aoki, Tove Lo, Chris brown, Maroon 5, & Pitbull. In 2015 his debut EP “Up All Night” was signed by Steve Aoki’s Label, DIM MAK. If you’re looking for something a little more playful that has a nice house vibe under it, Panic City might find itself in your next playlist.

2. Toro Y Moi / Les Sins

Toro Y Moi is a man of many talents and a man of many DJ styles. If you search him as Toro Y Moi, he has developed a niche sound considered chillwave which leans toward a more hip hop vibe. But he also has an alter ego Les Sins that explores a more brighter, pop commercial sound, picture a house, techno, french electronic sound. Both stage names have their loyal fan base, which one do you find yourself in?

3. Mark Redito

One of my favorites on the list, Mark Redito, formerly known as spazzkid, has such a fun unique take on EDM with his J Pop / electronic pop music. It almost sounds like walking through your favorite anime. A nice uptempo beat making you want to dance with some unique “cuter” sounds to keep you feeling good. If other music makes you rage, Mark’s music truly brings a fresh positive note to your soul.

4. Manilla Killa

Manilla Killa is a very popular artist, you might also know him with his Indian American producer coutnerpart, Candle Weather, creating the asian duo group, Hotel Garuda, being named as a top 10 music group to watch for by Ultra Music! However, Manilla Killa has also produced as a solo artist and is one of the best in the game. With over 338k monthly listeners on spotify and 2 tracks with over 17M listens, Manilla Killa delivers a more “feelsy” type of music that makes your heart feel like it's riding on ocean waves. Crisp melodies, beautiful usage of space in his music, and soothing melodies, see why Manilla Killa is a fan favorite on the EDM scene.

5. Shawn Wasabi

Accredited to co-inventing the Midi Fighter 64, Shawn Wasabi uses his iconic custom finger drumming machine to deliver fun, playful beats that constantly make your ears dance. In 2015, using his Midi Fighter 64, Shawn released his first viral song “Marble Soda”, containing samples from 153 different tracks and sounds, reaching 1 million views on Youtube within 48 hours of being uploaded. Although he has over 450k monthly listeners on spotify, his technique on his Midi Fighter is a treat in itself to watch. EDM is truly an artform that has a community and “sound” for everyone. Whether you want to rage and headbang, get in your emotions and feel new things, or shuffle to some classic house, there is a place for everyone. More so, now than ever, it is also a place for Filipino DJs and Producers to shine, so let’s give our pinoys support and blow up their listens and views! AND if there are any that I failed to mention, send them my way so I can spotlight them in the next EDM review.
