Because truthfully, speaking from experience, half the battle of binge watching is finding a series or movie that really sparks your interest and is actually worth your time. Lucky for viewers all over the world, with the addition of Filipino movies to Netflix, we have so much recent traction for tagalog movies made from the homeland. So please find your seat, silence your cell phones, and prepare yourself for our 6 favorite Filipino movies on Netflix right now.
1. She’s Dating A Gangster
One of the first blockbusters for love team Kathniel starring Kathyrn Bernardo, who plays young Athena Dizon/Kelay Dizon and love team costar, Daniel Padilla, who plays young Kenji Delos Reyes/Kenneth Delos Reyes. The movie opens with father Kenji Delos Reyes going missing during a plane crash, both Kenneth and Kelay do their best to find Kenji in hopes of returning Keji to Kelay’s aunt, Athena Dizon, who is Kenji’s high school sweetheart and one true love. Playing on themes from two different eras and two different love interests, it’s so easy to find yourself kilig over and over as you watch, She’s Dating A Gangster.
2. Heneral Luna
If you’re looking for an entertaining way to learn more about the history of the Philippines but you crave a little more action and drama than your typical documentary, this is a great film to keep you at the edge of your seat. Follow along as we see the rise and fall of the world famous Philippine tactician, General Antonio Luna (brilliantly played by John Arcilla), and his pivotal role for Philippine Independence during the Philippine-American War. Often regarded as one of the fiercest but generational genius military minds at the time, this movie will leave you questioning if Heneral Luna was actually a war hero of the Philippines or a tyrant who deserved what he got in the end.
3. The Hows of Us
Probably the most famous movie on this list, breaking multiple records, earning a Golden Jury Award and honors at the 50th Guillermo Box Office Entertainment Awards and receiving the Camera Obscura Award for its success worldwide, see why actress Kathryn Bernardo (character Georgina “George” Reyes) and Daniel Padilla (character Primo Alvarez) were recognized as Phenomenal Box Office Stars in this 2018 hit film. The movie starts as the couple plans to sell their home after years of heartbreak and discontent, playing on emotions that many of us have felt at one time or another. Will the harsh reality of life triumph their once treasured relationship and bring an end to all the memories of their first home? Grab the tissue if you plan to watch one of the best love movies of all time.
4. Bride For Rent
One of the most iconic Filipino romantic comedies of all time, it has been almost 10 years since its release and I still believe it can hold its own against some of the biggest movies in recent years. Rocco Espiritu (played by Xian Lim) loses all his wealth during a poker match and needs to get married in order to receive his trust fund from his Grandmother. Enter love interest Rocky Dela Cruz (played by Kim Chiu) who is hired as Rocco’s pseudo wife where they do their best to act married in order to fool Rocco’s Grandmother. I’m sure the rest of the plot isn’t a big shock but the film’s huge success is due to the chemistry between Xian and Kim that will immediately draw you in, wanting for more.
5. Can’t Stop Falling In Love
Yes for the 3rd time, I’m suggesting another movie starring my favorite love team, Kathniel, only because they are really that good. This time we see two very different people try to undo a big mistake made years ago. Gabriela "Gab" Benedictos De La Cuesta (played by Kathryn Bernardo) is trying to correct a mishap on her end after saying yes to her long time boyfriend, Jason Aguinaldo (played by Matteo Guidicelli). Opposite to Gab, José Ibarra "Dos" García González Jr. (played by Daneil Padilla) is doing everything he can to give Gab what she wishes and I’m sure the rest can be assumed but nonetheless, the twists and turns of this love story will melt your heart and is worth an evening at home.
6. The Entitled
The Entitled is not your typical Filipino romantic comedy, follow along as we see Belinda Buenavista (played by Alex Gonzaga) trying her best to fit into a new lifestyle as the daughter of an extremely wealthy hotel mogul. Transitioning from a life of poverty, The Entitled is a true rags to riches story with lots of quirks and hiccups as we see unpolished Belinda do her best to shake off the crude humor and lack of etiquette that she grew up on in the streets. But of course, it wouldn’t be a love story without the hotel's charming attorney Jacob (Played by JC de Vera) to show her what it takes to earn the role as executive to her father’s hotel empire.
Just writing this list, I could have made an extra 14 recommendations but we both know there isn't enough tissue paper or enough PTO to get you through a “top 20” best Filipino movies on netflix. So for now enjoy these 6 cinematic experiences that will make you laugh, melt your heart, remember your history, but most importantly, they will keep you in touch with your Filipino culture. We hope you enjoy these movies as much as we did! Be sure to comment / share with us your favorite Filipino movies on Netflix and stay tuned if they make “Part 2 of Our Fave Filipino Movies on Netflix”.
