Top 4 Under the Radar Destinations to Travel to in the Philippines
I may be biased, but the Philippines is unquestionably one of the top most beautiful nations in the world. It’s the home of world-renowned natural wonders, beautiful beaches with pristine waters, delicious food, friendly locals, and for the most part, it’s affordable.
The Philippines has over 7,000 islands! The most difficult part is figuring out which islands to visit, other than tourist filled Boracay, Bohol, and Palawan. Why limit yourself when there are literally thousands of hidden gems that are waiting to be explored.
The list I am going to share may be underrated, but I tend to root for the underdogs. Slowly but surely, they’re gaining traction and becoming beloved travel destinations thanks to the power of social media and the #itsmorefuninthephilippines marketing campaign. It’s much easier to share and discover new places as information has become more accessible.
Much of these islands are undeveloped, so they may not have tourism infrastructure just yet. Before you pack your bags and head to the islands, make sure that you adequately prepare. There are very few ATMs and businesses that accept electronic payments so it’s best to have enough cash to get you through your stay. Also, you may want to pack snacks, alcohol, and anything you can’t live without because chances are, you won’t be able to find or purchase it on the islands. If you’re truly looking for a relaxing trip where you can unplug, live simply, and be one with nature, these are the go to spots for you:
Balabac
Palawan is a very popular beach destination, where El Nido and Coron are located. Skip the crowds and head over to Balabac Islands which is also located in Palawan. You’ll find pink-sand beaches, exotic marine life, and non-commercial businesses. This is a place where you can find peace and quiet. There are no luxury resorts and few amenities available on the islands. The closest airport and city is Puerto Princesa, which is where you should pick up everything you’ll need to last throughout your vacation.
2. Siquijor
Siquijor is the third smallest province in the Philippines. It’s associated with witchcraft, black magic, shamans, and supernatural creatures which is why it’s referred to as the “Mystic Island of Central Visayas.”
Siquijor is gaining popularity as its natural beauty has blown up due to social media. Cambugahay Falls is the most popular waterfall, which has three tiers and a swimming hole. It’s also known for healthy coral reefs, the white sand of Tubod Beach, beautiful sunsets at Paliton Beach, and great cliff jumps at Salagdoong Beach.
Siquijor does have tourism infrastructure, but it is much less developed. San Juan is the hot spot, where you want to be. This is where you will find most of the resorts, guesthouses, restaurants, and bars.
3. Negros Oriental
Negros Oriental is a province also located in the Visayas region, and is the capital city of Dumaguete. It’s nicknamed “The City of Gentle People” because of the locals’ warm hospitality. It’s a college town, but it’s filled with cultural heritage, and breathtaking natural wonders such as Apo Island. Apo Island has pristine water, which makes it perfect for underwater activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving. If you’re a diver, this is a must see.
4. Siargao
Siargao is known as the “Surfing Capital” of the Philippines. Its most popular attraction is Cloud 9, which is one of the most well-known surfing spots in the country. Even if you’re not a surfer, come take a stroll along the boardwalk around sunrise or sunset. Siargao is the perfect place for outdoor lovers, adrenaline junkies who want to rock climb, and those simply looking just to sit back and relax on the white-sand beaches. There are plenty of beautiful beaches here: Doot, Secret, Pacifico, and Alegria to name a few worth visiting.
These are just four under the radar destinations, out of 7,000+ islands that you can choose from. A few years ago, the Department of Tourism did a huge marketing campaign to attract more travelers to come visit. Do you recall seeing or hearing about #itsmorefuninthephilippines ? Hopefully, after you’ve read a little more about what the Philippines has to offer, along with seeing these beautiful photos, I don’t think you need much more convincing. So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to look for your passport, pack your bags, and enjoy what the islands have to offer. After all, it’s more fun in the Philippines.
