10 Things to Know About True Lies Star Ginger Gonzaga

When James Cameron’s “True Lies” hit theaters almost 30 years ago in 1994, the story of a spy, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger at the time, moonlighting as a computer salesman while his bored wife played by Jamie Lee Curtis chilled at home wondering how she could spice up their marriage. Fast-forward to almost three decades later, CBS gives the action flick a reboot in a weekly series starring the talented and stunning Ginger Gonzaga. If you’ve followed her career, you’re well aware of her star power, stunning beauty and quirky sense of humor. If you haven’t, you’re in luck, because we’ve rounded up a couple more things you’re going to want to know about this multi-hyphenate Filipina powerhouse.

1. Playing Helen Tasker in True Lies is Ginger’s first lead role on primetime TV ever. Which is hard to believe given her megawatt talent and huge discography!

2. By starring in the TV series 'True Lies,' Ginger Gonzaga made her character Filipino, leading to more characters of the same nationality on the show. The actress told ABS-CBN’s Yong Chavez how her early experience in Hollywood made her determined to open more doors to actors like her and that this show was the perfect opportunity to champion diversity since she could feasibly make sure they hired Filipino actors to play her children in the show.

3. She was born in Pennsylvania but grew up in Modesto, California (she attended Beyer High School) with her Dutch Mother and Filipino Father who was born in Cebu.

4. In 2019, she had a role in Paul Rudd’s series Living with Yourself. She portrays "the Angry Young Congresswoman" Anabela Ysidro-Campos, also known as simply AYC, a character based on Congresswoman AOC in the 2020 satirical space comedy Space Force.

5. In January 2021, she was cast in the Disney+ streaming series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law for Marvel Studios, playing the She-Hulk’s best friend, Nikki Ramos.

6. Ginger went to the University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Santa Barbara, where she majored in political science and eventually realized her love for acting.

7. Ginger prides herself in doing a lot of her own stunts in the True Lies pilot (though not all of them!).

8. Ginger made her directorial debut with the film 'Your Day,' starring herself and Jason Ritter.

9. She is a staunch advocate for LGBTQ rights and mental health awareness. She also stresses self-care and setting boundaries with herself including focusing on no negative self-talk. Ginger has had her fair share of experiences with eating disorders, undiagnosed bipolar II, and ADHD at a young age and since there wasn’t much discussion on mental health when Gonzaga was growing up, she makes it a point to read and learn more about herself every chance she gets and encourages everyone to do the same.

 10. While Ginger had come out as bisexual through her “She-Hulk” character last year, she has been romantically tied to Jim Carey and Jim Jefferies in the past and speculation is that she is currently dating another comedian Taylor Williamson. Clearly, she has a type: funny!
