Celebrate 31 Days of Filipino American History Month
It’s finally October and officially Filipino American History Month. Not to be confused with Filipino American Heritage Month. This month, we commemorate the first Filipinos to have arrived in the continental United States at what is now Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587. In 1992, the Filipino American National Historical Society introduced FAHM, and in 2009, US Congress officially recognized October as FAHM in the U.S.
To celebrate, we’ve rounded up some resources and events to share our rich history and come together with our communities.

By the early to mid 1900’s, Little Manila in South Stockton became home to one of the largest Filipino populations in the country. There were many firsts for the Stockton area because of the Filipino community from churches, shops, and clubs, according to Terry Torres with the Filipino American National Historical Society. What use to stretch for several blocks off El Dorado Street to Downtown, not much remains of Little Manila. Most of the buildings have been torn down as urban development and a highway moved in.
