Philippines Independence Day History Quick Facts
The Philippines was a Spanish colony for over 300 years and are named after King Philip II of Spain. Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the Philippines in 1521 and claimed the islands for Spain. The Spaniards eventually acquired a footing in the Philippines when Miguel Lopez de Legazpi led an expedition in 1565. In 1571, they erected Intramuros, which was subsequently renamed Manila and became the country's capital.
After years of colonization from Spain, later the occupation from the US and Japan, the Independence of the Philippines is something to be truly celebrated.
