Breaking Boundaries | 'Rewind' Becomes First Filipino Film to Surpass $16M at Global Box Office
Who wouldn’t want to be given the chance to go back in time and try to rectify their mistakes or change the past? Newest Filipino Film “Rewind" invites viewers to ponder this tantalizing proposition, at a cost as it delves into the realm of second chances.
In a cinematic breakthrough, the Filipino film "Rewind" has made history by becoming the first Filipino title to exceed $16 million at the global box office. "Rewind" offers a poignant exploration of the transformative power of divine intervention on a failing relationship, captivating audiences worldwide with its profound storytelling and emotional depth.
Led by the magnetic on-screen presence of real-life couple Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera, "Rewind" didn't just capture hearts—it rewrote the record books, becoming a domestic box office sensation with a staggering 900 million pesos in earnings.
Directed by Mae Cruz Alviar, the film is a poignant tale of love and redemption, centered on the unraveling marriage of John (Dantes) and Mary (Rivera). When a divine intervention grants John the chance to revisit the past and go back in time to mend their relationship after a regrettable accident, the couple embarks on a journey of self-discovery and second chances… and while we don’t wan’t to give too much away, this too good to be true opportunity comes with a caveat, of course. A familiar plot made new again but the Dantes’ and Rivera’s oustanding performances and chemistry.
"Rewind" premiered on December 25 at the Metro Manila Film Festival 2023, captivating audiences with its heartfelt narrative and stellar performances, before making waves in the US at the Manila International Film Festival.
Having amassed a global box office revenue of approximately ₱902 million ($16 million), the film stands as the highest-grossing Philippine film to date, ahead of “Hello, Love, Goodbye” (2019) and “The Hows of Us” (2018). All tear-jearkers, by the way. (Sobbing reactions of “Rewind” movie-goers are actually still trending on TikTok!)
As "Rewind" continues to captivate audiences and break box office records, it serves as a testament to the growing influence of Filipino cinema on the global stage. With its powerful storytelling, compelling performances, and universal themes, "Rewind" has cemented its place as a groundbreaking film that transcends cultural boundaries and resonates with audiences worldwide.
“Rewind” is currently playing only in theaters- mainly in the US, Canada, Australia and the Philippines. Check showtimes in your city and go- but don’t forget to bring your tissues.
